2018 Calgary Spartans Awards Night and AGM

Our 2018 Annual General Meeting and Awards Banquet is being held on Saturday, November 10th, at the Village Park Inn, 1804 Crowchild Trail NW (across from McMahon Stadium).

The event includes a buffet dinner, following the business meeting which starts at 6 pm. Once we’re done with the business of electing a new executive and approving financials we move on to the fun and interesting parts of the evening, the awards presentation and our guest speaker address.

The Calgary Spartans are pleased to announce the speaker for our 2018 Awards Banquet and AGM on November 10th. We are proud to welcome OleSeyi Smith, a member of the Canadian National 4 X 100m relay team in London 2012, as well as a member of the Canadian National Bobsled Team in Pyeong Chang 2018. 

 This evening is a great opportunity to get together with fellow athletes, coaches, parents and other guests to celebrate the achievements of the past year including athlete awards and a slide show featuring our athletes in action.

Oluseyi Smith Biography:

Oluseyi Smith referred to as “Shay” Smith moved from Nigeria via Senegal to Canada in 1996. Smith has been involved with the sport of Athletics at the National level since 2003. Smith was completive in various sports growing up. He played soccer until age 16 with the Ottawa Internationals Club. He played in the UK’s top volleyball league for one year with his University team. His athletics journey began with a suggestion from a home room teacher in grade 5 to join the Ottawa Lions Track and Field Club. It became a full-time obsession by the age 18.

Smith first competed in athletics for Canada in 2003 at the World Youth Championships. He also represented Canada at the 2005 Junior Pan American Games, the 2006 World Junior Champions, the 2009 World University Games, the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the 2009 and 2011 World Championships, and the 2012 Olympic Games.

Smith’s first Olympic experience was at London 2012. He was part of Canada’s 4x100m relay team that finished in the bronze medal position behind Jamaica and the United States, only to be later disqualified for a lane violation.

Shay has lived athletics all over the world. While in Canada he competed for the Ottawa Lions Track and Field Club. During his years in Rome, Italy he competed for CUS Roma. While attending Loughborough University in the United Kingdom he raced for his university and Sale Harriers Manchester Athletics Club.

During his athletic career Shay competed in the 100m, 200m, long jump, and 4 X100m relay. He holds the 100m record for British Universities and the Canadian U17 long jump record.

In 2017 Smith decided to make the switch from summer to winter sport and began training with Canada’s bobsleigh team. In his World Cup debut in November 2017, he won bronze in Park City as a member of Christopher Spring’s four-man crew. In December, he helped push Justin Kripps to four-man silver in Innsbruck. He was also part of a trio of fourth-place finishes in the four-man event during the 2017-18 World Cup season. His second Olympic experience was at Pyeong Chang 2018 where he finished sixth as a member of Kripps’ four-man crew.

Smith received a Bachelor of Electronic and Electrical Engineering and Master of Science in Renewable Energy Technologies from Loughborough University in the United Kingdom and currently works as a project manager in Calgary, AB. In addition to his roles on the Canadian Olympic Committee Athletes’ Commission and Athletics Canada Athlete Council, Shay also sits as a member of the Canadian Prairies Group of Chartered Engineers.

In his free time, Smith enjoys watching Netflix, international politics, podcasts, outdoor activities such as Stand up Paddle Board, canoeing, hiking and recreational volleyball.
