Program: Throws (Shot Put, Hammer Throw, Javelin)
NCCP Certifications: Club Coach (Trained)
From his time as a Junior hockey player, to coaching both University of Calgary Dinos and Calgary Spartans throwers, Coach Liam has a passion for developing athletic excellence in both himself and those he coaches.
With his degree in kinesiology and his throwing certification, Liam is well-versed in how the human body moves and performs athletically. He brings this knowledge to his coaching, and uses a biomechanical approach to throwing that focuses foremost on technique.
“You only have to look back at athletes like Italy’s Zane Weir or New Zealand’s Tom Walsh at the 2021 Olympics to see what a difference technique can make,” says Coach Liam. “They’re competing against guys who are more than a half a foot taller, but when you see how much force and torque they can generate with their right foot in a throwing circle—that’s how you use technique to beat bigger competitors—and that’s something I love teaching my athletes how to do.”
Liam’s approach helped net the Dinos throwing team its best-ever season in 2021, with six athletes making it to University Nationals and three leaving with medals. As Coach of the Crescent Heights Throws Team from 2015-2020, one of his proudest coaching moments came when an athlete of his who barely qualified for City Championships in grade 10 took home a provincial bronze medal only two years later.
Coach Liam also brings with him a track record of his own athletic success. Having played Junior Hockey in BC, Liam switched to throws in Track & Field when he started university, netting silver medals in the 2018 Canada West Championships in both Weight Throw and Shot Put. In 2020, he captured the bronze and a team silver in shot put at Canadian U Sport Nationals.
