Middle and Long Distance Program
The Spartans Middle and Long Distance Program is for athletes interested in middle and long distance running. Includes the 800 m, 1200m, 1500m, 3000m, 5000m, 10,000m and steeplechase on the track, as well as cross-country, marathon and the running portion (only) of the triathlon.
Along with building endurance, there is a focus on developing the right balance between speed and endurance necessary to the longer races. A weight training facility to build strength is available three times per week.
Practice Times and Locations
Outdoor Fall Season: September to October 31 or the first snow
Base training and cross country starts in late August from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Meet at St. Andrews Hill, on the west side of University Drive, 2504 – 13th Avenue N.W. just south of McMahon Stadium. Remember to dress for the weather and bring a water bottle. Parking is available at the south end of the field.
Indoor Training Period: November to March
The group meets at the University of Calgary Olympic Oval from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Outdoor Training Period: April to August
Spring and summer training is from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at Foothills Athletic Park Track, 2424 – University Drive N.W. directly north of McMahon Stadium. Remember to dress for the weather and bring a water bottle.
